Did you miss the August Faith Doing Justice Newsletter? Sorry folks - I was in Manila and my IT arrangements let me down. We are now moving our publishing schedule to the first Thursday of the month.

Our social justice concerns today involve many overlapping layers of actors, causes and consequences. How can the principle of subsidiarity inform our networking for change at different levels?

Unpacking the meaning and significance of Benedict XVI's first social encyclical Caritas in Veritate will take some time and effort.

Faith Doing Justice will provide a variety of resources to help you in this process over the coming months. We have made a start with a Discussion Guide to the encyclical and a PowerPoint presentation on the theme of love and truth - and our Tips for Reading Catholic Social Teaching Documents remain useful. Reflections on particular themes and topics will follow.

Respect is more than a vague positive feeling towards someone or something. It is not mere tolerance of others and their ways, nor is it a paternalistic concern that pushes its way on others.

To respect a person or a culture is to honour them, to reverence the presence of the living God active in and through them. Respect proceeds from a stance of equality and acknowledges the capacity and the right of others to decide and to act.

Respect and partnership require the consistent exercise of subsidiarity as well as solidarity.

A 'friend' in cyberspace may be nothing more than a casual link - or someone who becomes your partner for life!

In this year's World Communications Day Message, Pope Benedict XVI explores the nature of friendship as a participation in God’s communicative and unifying love, and looks at how new technologies can help or hinder friendship.

Faith Doing Justice is back with a fresh new look and better navigation!

Our site has grown a lot since we began in November 2006, so it was time to reorganize. We hope that the new menu under the new banner will be easier to use, and that shorter pages and less scrolling will make our material more accessible. Check out the new search engine! Tell us what you think.

Our thanks go to the Loyola Institute and Church Resources, founding partners in this project, for their support. The Faith Doing Justice project continues now into the next stage of its life as an activity of the Australian Jesuits, who have sponsored the work from the outset.

Caring for sick, elderly or disabled people has become a global industry with a feminised workforce. What happens to us when we try to marketise and outsource solidarity and respect for human dignity?
