This month the Japanese people have marked the 69th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of the Second World War. A declaration to work for a more peaceful world was the centrepiece on 6 August and Catholic Social Teaching and the teachings of Jesus as we know them in scripture, are imbued with the exhortation to listen to and care for the other, be they enemy, friend or someone in need.

The world has watched in horror as Israel and Hamas locked horns in Gaza while almost 200 Palestinians have died in a week of escalating violence. Egypt’s 14 July proposal of a ceasefire looked doubtful because of its history of punishing The Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas’ counterpart in Egypt, and the way Israel agreed immediately where previously, as Palestinian commentator Ramzy Baroud says, Israel has had to be ‘dragged screaming and kicking’ to the negotiating table.

The gospel call to look after the ‘least of my brethren’ is clearly flouted in many of the stories of political bullying and social exclusion in this month’s newsletter.

While many are advocating a boost in the minimum wage in Australia and New Zealand as a way of improving living conditions for the most vulnerable and closing the gap between rich and poor, internally displaced refugees in Sudan are fighting for their lives. No matter where you look, entire populations are suffering to satisfy the greed of a few powerful decision-makers.

Tickets to a forum in Melbourne on Sunday 10 November to mark the centenary of women’s suffrage in Australia sold out in a day and the event was livestreamed in Sydney, Canberra and Hobart. The Victorian Women’s Trust also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Julia Gillard as the country’s first woman the hold this office. Her minority government’s achievements were lauded in the forum’s theme, ‘credit where credit is due’.
