The federal election is over and the Liberal Coalition has control of the House of Representatives. The foreign aid budget has been drastically cut and asylum seekers may be in for an even rougher ride than under Julia Gillard’s Labor administration.

What will this mean for those who are marginalised in our society including the asylum seekers banished to Christmas Island in the far off Indian Ocean or detention on Nauru, risking their lives to flee a brutal regime?

As Australians prepare to choose a new government (7 September) thoughts turn to who can best represent the interests of the ‘least of my brethren’ (Mt 25:40).

In election campaigns of any hue, funding is in the spotlight and candidates are reluctant to bite the hand that supports their electoral campaigns.

So taxes on the rich are unpopular campaign messages and income distribution is often deftly side-stepped.

Pope Francis’ first encyclical emphasises the main theme of his first four months in the Vatican that Christians must serve the suffering poor, building on Benedict’s theme in his last two encyclicals that the all-encompassing love of God leads to a transforming action to address human misery.

In Faith Doing Justice this month we see examples of people proclaiming this transforming love by speaking out against injustice.

The Federal Parliament is to be congratulated for its unity in finally according Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders the dignity of recognition as first peoples of the land. The lower house passed the Act of Recognition on Wednesday 13 February, the fifth anniversary of the then prime minister Kevin Rudd’s apology to the lost generations.
